Question

About 2 years ago my pharmacist told me CHAMPVA would not pay for a DAW prescription for Toprol XL and I had to get the generic.(metoprolol)

I have suffered from side affects ever since and they got worse when my doctor recently upped my dosage a little. After doing hours of research on the generic metoprolol I demanded the pharmacy give me the real Toprol. They charged me 66 bucks and said CHAMPVA will not pay for it.

Then I called my doctor to find that the prescription was DAW all of this time and NY state law prohibits changes to a DAW prescription.

I am considering how I will handle that part of my problem.

But my point here is this- I called CHAMPVA and they are always as helpful as they can be and they referred me directly to the SXC Health Solutions department which has the formulary as to what CHAMPVA will and wont pay for.

SXC called my pharmacist right away.

Long story- The Pharmacy has my refund waiting-My cost has been reduced to the regular co pay- for the med (Toprol)I should have been given all along.

I am really ticked off by this because how many CHAMPVAers are given generic when the real med will not cost them that much more.

The SXC number is 1-888-546-5502 and they can tell you right away if your prescription is on their formulary list. Most brand names are.

I am angry at myself knowing prescribed meds were part of my wrongful death FTCA award regarding my husband.

I should have questioned the pharmicist 2 years ago but I bought what he was selling:

He said

CHAMPVA wont pay -WRONG and

the generic is the same -REALLY WRONG!

I guess all of us have to be very proactive in any medical issues as well as our claims.

I have had serious side affects from the metoprolol and reported them to my doctor and am writing complaint to the FDA.

My doctor thought I was getting Toprol as prescribed but I wasnt.

The pharmacist didn't realize that CHAMPVA is not like the other forms of Insurance so we CHAMPVAs have to make sure they know the benefits we get and dont try to pull this on anyone else.

My wife takes metropolol and champ VA pays us back on her copays like clockwork. If the RO were as efficient as CHamp VA then we would be dancing in the streets.

I think Glenn Johnson needs to be promoted to run the rest of the VA. Thats how impressed I am by him.

A Veteran is a person who served this country. Treat them with respect.

A Disabled Veteran is a person who served this country and bears the scars of that service regardless of when or where they served.

Treat them with the upmost respect. I do. Rejection is not a sign of failure. Failure is not an option, Medical opinions and evidence wins claims. Trust in others is a virtue but you take the T out of Trust and you are left with Rust so be wise about who you are dealing with.

My wife prefers generic and in the past the cost of brand over generic was usually pretty close. Less that 5 to 10 dollars more. She got a new prescription yesterday and my copay for generic was 15 and for brand 85. I suspect that the VA is trying to ween us off of brand. I bought the generic and so far have not heard a complaint.

Most of my meds are generic that I get from VA.

I am really getting disgusted by the sleazy way insurance handles us.

Veterans deserve real choice for their health care.

Bronco, have you been talking to my little boy behind my back? He has been using (very successfully) your suggested tactics for several years!

I have an interesting scenario.... two 100% disabled Vets, married. Can they also be eligible for ChampVA , so that they can see a "civilian" Doctor, to get a second opinion from an opinion by a VA Doctor? Too difficult to get a second opinion from another VA Doctor, as one will NOT go against the other, especially if an error is found.

Wac Vet..

That is an interesting scenario..dont know the answer, but my first impression would be that they could use their preferred insurance, but not combine them.

If I were eligible for Champva, I would use it instead of the VA. I think the VA has figured that out...and they dont want a mass exodus to to Champva..that is why Vets are told, "Take the VA health care or leave it". If VA health care were truly, like the politicians boast, "world class", there would be no problem with Vets leaving for the private sector, and Vets would not be "forced" to use VA medical care or do without. Government employees are often offered a choice of several health care plans...I wonder why they dont do that with Vets?

Not only would I take ChampVA I would even endure the co pays and that would mean a substantial amount cause they don't have any of the donut hole provisions.

My wife has ChampVA and Medicare and I cannot think of a better combination. After the 50 dollar deductible there is only a copay of 25% for meds and ChamoVA really does not have a formulary it is for all meds including generic or brand. Also the meds are negotiated so much lower than Medicare.

Good Luck

In an ideal world the VA would put all service connected Veterans on Insurance and pay the co pays

Veterans deserve real choice for their health care.

    • These decisions have made a big impact on how VA disability claims are handled, giving veterans more chances to get benefits and clearing up important issues.

      Service Connection

      Frost v. Shulkin (2017)
This case established that for secondary service connection claims, the primary service-connected disability does not need to be service-connected or diagnosed at the time the secondary condition is incurred 1. This allows veterans to potentially receive secondary service connection for conditions that developed before their primary condition was officially service-connected.

      Saunders v. Wilkie (2018)
The Federal Circuit ruled that pain alone, without an accompanying diagnosed condition, can constitute a disability for VA compensation purposes if it results in functional impairment 1. This overturned previous precedent that required an underlying pathology for pain to be considered a disability.

      Effective Dates

      Martinez v. McDonough (2023)
This case dealt with the denial of an earlier effective date for a total disability rating based on individual unemployability (TDIU) 2. It addressed issues around the validity of appeal withdrawals and the consideration of cognitive impairment in such decisions.

    • I met with a VSO today at my VA Hospital who was very knowledgeable and very helpful.  We decided I should submit a few new claims which we did.  He told me that he didn't need copies of my military records that showed my sick call notations related to any of the claims.  He said that the VA now has entire military medical record on file and would find the record(s) in their own file.  It seemed odd to me as my service dates back to  1981 and spans 34 years through my retirement in 2015.  It sure seemed to make more sense for me to give him copies of my military medical record pages that document the injuries as I'd already had them with me.  He didn't want my copies.  Anyone have any information on this.  Much thanks in advance.

    • Caluza Triangle defines what is necessary for service connection
Caluza Triangle – Caluza vs Brown defined what is necessary for service connection. See COVA– CALUZA V. BROWN–TOTAL RECALL

This has to be MEDICALLY Documented in your records:

Current Diagnosis.   (No diagnosis, no Service Connection.)

      In-Service Event or Aggravation.
Nexus (link- cause and effect- connection) or Doctor’s Statement close to: “The Veteran’s (current diagnosis) is at least as likely due to x Event in military service”

    • Do the sct codes help or hurt my disability rating
    • VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.

They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.

      This is not true,

      Proof:

About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends.

Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken.

A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did.

I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.
