Personality Disorder But Treated For Anxiety/depression

Rate this question

Question

I am currently service connected at 30% for irritable bowels and 10% for my right knee. I was diagnosed with PTSD by a private doc however the VA said I had a sever personality disorder (NOS). The VA is now treating me with meds for depression and anxiety. I visited my doc today and asked how is it that I had personality disorder yet I am being treated for anxiety and depression. I was informed by him that the diagnosis of personality disorder was (NOS) meaning the VA was not sure if I had a personality disorder or not. So my question is do I continue to pursue the PTSD claim or should I submit a claim for anxiety/depression based on the fact the VA is treating me with meds for anxiety/depression

If you claim the PTSD there are many factors unless you have verified stressors or combat medal. The VA did ease the fear base standards meaning that vets can claim things that happened in the military that caused them PTSD, unlike before it was more for combat. It is up to you though because it is all mental and paid the same. Do you have a combat medal or was in an imminent danger area? If not then you will have to fill out this form called VA from 21-0781 which is for ptsd and you have to tell them what events caused your ptsd. Have your evidence ready because if you don't have everything in when you file for it, it will be a longer journey than if you didn't have it.

I found the VA to sometimes want to "see it for themselves". They often like to diagnose you with certain disorders and then see if they stand the test of time in order to confirm a diagnosis. It sucks though, because it feels like they don't trust non-VA specialists.

Additionally, it might help to keep in mind who saw you. If you were seen by a psychologist or psychiatrist, they are supposed to be spot on. If you are seen by a resident or social worker, they have the get their assessment countersigned by their psychologist or psychiatrist boss. So, be sure to keep reading through your records to make sure you don't miss a corrective diagnosis.

The VA will not compensate for Personality Disorder and yet it is amazing how many they tag with this diagnosis. You need to ask what the personality disorder is I know that NOS means that it is not specific but they really have to say what it is and for many of us our original diagnosis was personality disorder and it turned out to be a bogus dx.

If you have PTSD you need someone at VA to say so and if not you need an MD to diagnose and also opine that it originated or got worse when you served.

Veterans deserve real choice for their health care.

This is one topic that I have a hard time understanding. I realize what the VA and For Hire docs try to do. You must have had something in your childhood that predispositioned you to come down with what you have now. Never mind if you served in combat, or were subject to physical or sexual abuse while in service, or just didn't take well to being shot at,or rocketed or what not, or that your service connected issues just have you so depressed and angry or anxious or all the above, NOT RELATED TO SERVICE. RRRRRR This is utterly and completely preposterous. Anal retantive turds they can be. ARRRRR IF it was not annotated in your entrance exam when you enlisted then it is arguable that you were of sound mind & body. No defects, not mental problems, you were fit as a fiddle. If you sustained injuries from service to this GREAT country of OURS in the line of DUTY then DAMN IT , it can reasonably be concluded that it is AT LEAST AS LIKELY that it RELATED TO SERVICE. Okay enhancing my calm.

If you suffered some type of stressor, something that traumatized you, via PTSD, MST, anxiety, depression or something with a diagnosis, because of service it will obviously change you, change your personality because you will never be the same. I DESPISE this label the examiners try to put on veterans. Of course your personality will change, its part of the coping mechanisms that we as humans have in order to put traumatic events behind us and try to protect our damaged mental state. Sometimes, most times, you can never fix it once its broken, but you can try to mend it, live with it and try to be as close the person that you once were. Sometimes, most times you can be successful, but UNTIL then you are suffering from something that would not have been there had you not served.

My sincere apologies, I think I need a breather. I really wish I could fly my quad. : ( Two more weeks and I can fly again.

Thanks for the replies excellent advice from all you folks. I served in the Gulf for about 7 months.I was a Marine Grunt (MOS 0311) We were fired on by missiles on and off for 4 days we slept in MOP gear for over a week.We cleared and marked mines. I do have a combat action medal listed on my ddd214.My stressor was documented by the VA.I was also given a dx for ptsd by a private (TWO) Phsychatrist and treated with mediation.I got an Honorable Discharge in 1992.The VA doc that did my c&p noted in her paperwork that my childhood was normal with no history of abuse of any kind.Maybe I should get a private doc to call BS on the personality disorder? As a side not the VA just sent me a release of information request to search for private doctors records of alcoholism which I don't have.lol
