Question

I was in the Army from 28-92. In that time I was an 11b (infantry) the whole time. Also, do i need / should file for any sedondary conditions? I have have been diagnosed with PTSD- non-combat related. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I WOULD NOT submit a claim for SC of Tinnitus secondary to any condition's other

than SC'd audiology conditions such as hearing loss, otitis media, or menieres.

It can also be SC'd secondary to some medications to treat an already SC'd condition.

PTSD ITSELF - DOES NOT CAUSE TINNITUS.

Sorry, didnt mean it like that...I KNOW PTSD doesnt cause Tinnitus. Just wanted to know how to file the claim(s)

Ranger: Although the PTSD and Tinnitus are completely independent claims issues, they do have something in common. You are going to have to prove to the C&P Examiner and subsequently the VA rater that both conditions have a Nexus to your military service. Your Lay testimony is sufficient for current Tinnitus symptoms but your military record will have to backup your contentions. If you were in combat this should not present any problems for PTSD or Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a flat 10%r, no bilateral factor even if in both ears. The hearing impairment is a different story, very difficult to get anything above a SC at 0%. However the Bilateral Factor does come into play. If you were to get a 10 & 20, you would end up with a 30, actually I think they bump it up to 31% SC with the Bilateral. You might want to review the VA DBQ for PTSD. What the C&P examiner puts on that form can Float or Sink your boat.

Also - Tinnitus can be C'd secondary to head injury - ie: TBI - Concussion.

All you have to do is submit a claim for SC of Tinnitus - a C&P should be scheduled

and the Audiologist should opine on

1)whether or not they feel you have Tinnitus

2) whether it is objective tinnitus (not able to be SC'd) or subjective tinnitus (able to be SC'd),

3) if it is infrequent (SC at zero%) or recurrent (SC at 10%).

4) the nexus (as likely as not cause) of your Tinnitus.

5) they MIGHT also opine on whether in their opinion your Tinnitus

effects your employability in any way and support that finding with something

like Tinnitus interferes with your sleep to X degree etc....

That's about it in a nut shell.
