SMC, TBI/PTSD

Rate this question

Vet Dog and wife

Question

My Husband is rated totally and permanently 100% disabled with TBI; he also has severe PTSD, which is unrated. he is service connected for both of these problems. he also has several other health issues which are probably service connected. My husband was in the military in the late 1970s.  he applied for and received 100%  V A compensation around 1997.

the questions I have are:

1. Is my husband entitled to SMC,  housebound, or any other extra benefits?

2. are there any other issues we should know about?

Thank You for your help

That clears that up, he has a 100% PTSD  T & P with additional Dementia since 07/98. The Dementia only gets worse with time, and is what locked in the T & P on his PTSD 100% Rating.

I don't mean to offend you but how can a Vet with Major MH Issues be competent to get married? I take it he has no children of his own, that was acting as his VA Fiduciary. How long have you and he been married?

I would expect the VA to do an extensive Fiduciary appointment exam.

He has been under the control of the fiduciary department since his 100% rating. we have been living together for more than two years now, and have been married for over a year.

Thanks for the extra info

Thank you for being there for him and he for you. Have you discussed the benefits afforded to your 9 yr old son if Matt were to adopt him? Besides the CHAMPVA, there's a "Full Boat State University Ride" available worth a couple $100K.

Step children in most cases (if not all) are Fully recognized by the VA.

"What are some common terms used for CHAMPVA eligibility? • Beneficiary: CHAMPVA-eligible spouse, widow(er) or child. • Child: includes birth, adopted, stepchild or helpless. • Dependent: child, spouse or widow(er) of a qualifying sponsor. • Sponsor: a Veteran who is permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition, died as a result of a service-connected condition, was rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition at the time of death or died on active duty, and whose dependents are not otherwise entitled to DoD TRICARE benefits. • Service-connected: a VA Regional Office determination that a Veteran’s illness or injury is related to military service. • Spouse: wife or husband of a qualifying sponsor. • Widow(er): surviving spouse of a qualifying sponsor."
