It sure would be nice if other states too- followed this lead-

Here in NY - some tax districts have property tax exemptions based on service-

as well as deductions for widows and widowers of veterans who had owned and lived on same real estate in NY before they died.

I bet many veterans do not know of these potential benefits-

It pays to check with your County Veterans Service Agency or tax office to see if you are eligible.

GRADUATE ! Nov 2nd 2007 American Military University !

When thousands of Americans faced annihilation in the 1800s Chief

Osceola's response to his people, the Seminoles, was

simply "They(the US Army)have guns, but so do we."

Sameo to us -They (VA) have 38 CFR ,38 USC, and M21-1- but so do we.

I didn`t notice any property tax relief. That is the biggest struggle for me as I`m sure for all disabled vets. I hear some states does not make 100% disabled vets pay any property taxes. That would never happen here in Michigan. I don`t think a 100% vet gets any tax break.

Cavman,

Don't know about a 100% tax deferral, but here's what is in a flyer from Monroe, MI:

"Michigan Veterans' Trust Fund: Located in the same office at the courthouse. Open T - W - Th, 9-1. (734) 240-7359.

This is a financial assistance program for unforeseen emergencies on mortgage, rent, food, utility bills. A veteran with a minimum of 180 days war service who is honorably discharged can apply.

Property tax relief: A veteran with a disability rating can qualify for home property tax relief on State of Michigan 1040CR form."

CALNIGHT, how does that work ? how much would a person pay runks

TRUNKS,

LETS SAY YOUR HOUSE IS WORTH OR YOU PAID 307000. IN CAL IF YOU MAKE MORETHAN 44000 THAT INCLUDES VA COMP AND SSD OR ANY INCOME. YOU GET TAX EXEMPT ON 107000 SO YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY PROPERTY TAXES ON 200000. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF BUYING A HOME RIGHT NOW. SO IN MY COUNTY THE PROPERTY TAX RATE IS 1.25% OF THE VALUE OF THE HOUSE. IF YOU MAKE LESS THAN 44000 A YEAR REMBER THIS INCLUDES ALL INCOME VA COMP SSD AND YOUR SPOUSE IF YOUR MARRIED. YOU GET TAX EXEMPT ON 149000. I CALLED MY COUNTY TAX ACESSER OFFICE AND THEY MAILED ME THE APPLICATION. YOU MUST BE 100% OR IU. SO ON MY HOUSE I AM BUYING THE COST WAS 300,000 SO I WILL SEE A TAX BREAK OF ABOUT 100 A MONTH AND WILL HAVE TO PAY ABOUT 200 IN PROPERTY TAXES. MY INCOME IS OVER 44000 A YEAR.

What MN is doing for the returning vets, and the retired veterans, with this new program, he is talking about if fine, the trouble is, it does nothing for the disabled veteran, and for 100% veterans there is nothing again, free hunting and fishing license is all we get, and can't use either one, on account of my disabilities, so in essence we get nothing. I wrote to the governor trying to explain and ask why the 100% and the other disabled veterans don't get help with property taxes like states like Texas and Oklahoma and other states give their veteran, I suggested that someone in his office and check it out, and/or help on sales tax when we buy a vehicle or license plates for our vehicles, or anything else, as free hunting and fishing license is a insult, especially when all the legislature got their pre-diem raised from 68. to 98 dollars a day a couple of days back, and other perks were raised too, but they were complaining that they only got 38,000 a year income, most of them are rich in the first place, and most are not their for the money anyway. I know I shouldn't complain, as I have pretty good income, compared to a lot of disabled veterans, but had to work very hard to get what I get.

Be glad that you are in California Trunks. In Dallas Texas the Stae gives you 15,000 AV off and being 100% gets you the same deal that Seniors have. It does lock in the the School tax so it is the same each year.

My taxes went up 800 dollars this year from 2400 last year. Instead of 1.25% our tax rate is about 2.75% of Value. If I did not have the exemptions granted my Property Tax bill would be over $ 6,000.

We don't have a State Income Tax though. Good Luck to you and the people who pay the full rate like my son who owns a home thinks I get a terrific deal. I am grousing cause I have to pay by January 31st.

Veterans deserve real choice for their health care.

    • I met with a VSO today at my VA Hospital who was very knowledgeable and very helpful.  We decided I should submit a few new claims which we did.  He told me that he didn't need copies of my military records that showed my sick call notations related to any of the claims.  He said that the VA now has entire military medical record on file and would find the record(s) in their own file.  It seemed odd to me as my service dates back to  1981 and spans 34 years through my retirement in 2015.  It sure seemed to make more sense for me to give him copies of my military medical record pages that document the injuries as I'd already had them with me.  He didn't want my copies.  Anyone have any information on this.  Much thanks in advance.

Caluza Triangle – Caluza vs Brown defined what is necessary for service connection. See COVA– CALUZA V. BROWN–TOTAL RECALL

This has to be MEDICALLY Documented in your records:

Current Diagnosis.   (No diagnosis, no Service Connection.)

      In-Service Event or Aggravation.
Nexus (link- cause and effect- connection) or Doctor’s Statement close to: “The Veteran’s (current diagnosis) is at least as likely due to x Event in military service”

    • VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.

They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.

      This is not true,

      Proof:

About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends.

Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken.

A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did.

I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.
    • Welcome to hadit!

There are certain rules about community care reimbursement, and I have no idea if you met them or not.  Try reading this:

      https://www.va.gov/resources/getting-emergency-care-at-non-va-facilities/

However, (and I have no idea of knowing whether or not you would likely succeed) Im unsure of why you seem to be so adamant against getting an increase in disability compensation.

When I buy stuff, say at Kroger, or pay bills, I have never had anyone say, "Wait!  Is this money from disability compensation, or did you earn it working at a regular job?"  Not once.  Thus, if you did get an increase, likely you would have no trouble paying this with the increase compensation.

However, there are many false rumors out there that suggest if you apply for an increase, the VA will reduce your benefits instead.

That rumor is false but I do hear people tell Veterans that a lot.  There are strict rules VA has to reduce you and, NOT ONE of those rules have anything to do with applying for an increase.

Yes, the VA can reduce your benefits, but generally only when your condition has "actually improved" under ordinary conditions of life.

Unless you contacted the VA within 72 hours of your medical treatment, you may not be eligible for reimbursement, or at least that is how I read the link, I posted above. Here are SOME of the rules the VA must comply with in order to reduce your compensation benefits:
