Chapter 35 eligibility question

Rate this question

Question

I was just recently rated 100% P&T and was told I am eligible for chapter 35 DEA benefits. I do not currently have any dependents. I was told that DEA benefits have a shelf life of 10 years to be used. So in my situation my possible future children could not use this benefit?

Thank you all for the replies and clarification! and I just sent in my application for SDVI. Not sure how to purchase the extra amount because I didn't see an option for it but will do more research,

Have you contacted the VA Insurance Center? 800-669-8477

On Life Insurance, you can get additional $30K worth, called Supplemental S-DVI free. However, the veteran has to be under 65, and must apply within 1 year from the notice of the grant of waiver. The under 65 is a high bar for a lot of veterans.

I'm still wrestling with the VA Insurance Center on the waiver for veterans who still work. So far, they have not been able to show me where it says "totally disabled" is defined differently for insurance purposes. Not giving up...

I think the total amount of disabled Veteran  insurance for any  100% disabled  veteran can get is $30K ...not more unless something has changed in the law. .

Richard you may be correct, but that isn't what the VA sites says: https://www.va.gov/life-insurance/options-eligibility/s-dvi/  Specifically,

Can I get more life insurance coverage if I need it?

If you carry the basic S-DVI coverage and become totally disabled and unable to work, you can apply to get up to $30,000 more in coverage. This is called supplemental S-DVI coverage.

You may be able to get $30,000 of supplemental coverage if you qualify for a premiums waiver, and you meet both of the requirements listed below.

Both of these must be true. You:

  • Apply for the coverage within 1 year from the date you get notice of the grant of waiver, and
  • Are younger than age 65
  • "......you can get up to $30K MORE in coverage...
