Question

I have recently been raised up to 100% P & T for VA disability.

How do I find out about applying for Social Security?

Is there any source where I can learn about it, from being in my situation?

I don't know ANYTHING about it.  Please help!

It’s not as cut and dry as can you work, Social Security standards is how you do it. It’s all based on occupational standards. Example if I need to take frequent breaks due to multiple disabilities, if the job says I only get two 15 minute breaks but because of my conditions I must take frequent breaks or get up and move around. In this scenario I’m not allowed something that others are not, it would prevent me from accomplishing the goal and work expectations on a given day, Social Security declared that that makes me disabled. So it’s what’s needed for you to work just like everyone else. So when you have your exams you need to explain to the examiner your actual limitations

That's basically how I got approved for SSDI. Having to take more frequent breaks is called being off task. SSA said that I could perform light duty work but I would have to be allowed to be off task 15% of the time. There were no jobs in the economy that would allow me to be off task for 15% of the time so my claim was approved. I was approved at the hearing stage.

My process was similar to @Carl Bacon.

I applied at age 57 for SSDI - which requires certain criteria for eligibility - such as a work history in past 10 yrs.

I too received a call after applying online. I typed up concise medical and work history- one page for reviewer to see at the time of my exam. I was verbally approved on the spot after applying on line 2 months prior.

see www.ssa.gov for updated information.

IF you do not have enough "quarter" in work history overall, say you worked for cash, or it was unreported accurately by employer (you can check by creating an account online at same website)

you may be eligible for SSI - which is an entitlement type program capped at around $800 a month. (NOT SSDI)

The maximum limit for Social Security at this time of posting is $2600.

Even on SSDI my work history supported getting $2300 - SSDI you always get a lower amount capped even when you turn 65- a consideration for financial planning.

Factor in what Carl Bacon stated Medicare kicks in 24 months after approval -

Which cost at this time $170 a month, I have that directly withdrawn from my SSDI check to ensure continuity for payments in case I get incapacitated and in the hospital.

Medicare is your PART A - Hospital (no fee)

Medicare PART B is the ancillary care ($170)

Most people on a fixed income ask why pay part B if I have VA?

It covers rehab, durable medical equipment and other stuff, CMS/Medicare is the gold standard, and it is less beaurocratic than VA.  www.cms.gov

Simply if sick: more options and access. I worked in various hospitals for 21 yrs. is my only reference and seen this firsthand.

My 2 cents.

A friend of the show is names Lisa Hiering. She is a retired SSA employee from claims. Here is her website. She will steer you straight,
