Hi All

In my mental health notes it states.

Axis 1 depression NOS, R/O mood, D/O secondary to GMC,

Anyone have any idea what this means?

seems like an incomplete note...at your next appt maybe you can ask this "doc" to explain it and see what he/she says.

i'm guessing your VA is also a teaching hospital??

It's not a hospital, it's a community clinic, the doc told me that she does work at a private Hospital also. I went to their web site and found her name listed in their MH dept, it gave her education level and even her annual salary. Isn't the internet great.

I will ask her about the diagnosis next time I see her.

You got a bonafide Depression going on, and they haven't decided yet if the depression is severe enough to warrant a major depression (mood disorder) diagnosis. At present they are calling it Depression, not major depression, but that could change. This is a compensatable medical condition, are you going to, or have you filed a claim for Depression? ~Wings

I have made a call to my attorney's office to see when they will be filing a claim for depression secondary to my back disability.

A GAF of 50 is not "moderate". It means you have serious symptoms. One of the most common types of depression is one that is connected to a medical condition such as chronic pain. I don't know anyone with chronic pain that is not somewhat depressed over loss of control and disability. If you can connect your depression to a SC condition you could be looking at a 50-70% rating. I got 70% for a mental condition and I had a GAF of 50. This was before I was diagnosed with chronic pain disorder.

John...I said a GAF of 50 is severe, but it is on the border with moderate. 41 - 50 is severe, 51 - 60 is moderate.

i must be AFU then because i was curious and looked at my last GAF (done about 3 weeks ago) and it was 38........is AFU a category???

It boggles my mind how many get cuaght up in GAF's. They are only a guesstimate by someone at a particular time. I finally got a GAF of 50 after over 9 years of avoiding getting one. I guess I am on my way to being cured? One of our old Members I was trying to help actually felt he could talk a Doc into a lower GAF and I told him that in so doing if the Doc was Professional he would raise the GAF not lower it.
