Are Va Medical Centers Over-Prescribing Narcotics To Veterans?

many times the va docs UNDERMEDICATE pain sufferers. It causes a conditon called CLOCK WATCHING. Where a patients entire day surrounds the taking of thier medication, and trying to stretch them out, to keep the pain at bay. The va give out hydro and 500 mg aceto, like the regular army gives out Motrin, I believe the va gets big contracts for certain meds, and give them out, and not always the best thing a patient could be on. Take me for instance I have one kidney and lost the other one to kidney cancer. I asked my doc to cut the vicodon to 325 mg of acetoratpoison, from 500., she gave me long speech abt how many mg of aceto is safe perday. So I told her, ok, now cut that in half. I have one kidney REMEMBER!!! well she just played it off, and stood firm. They could have me on much better meds like oxycontin, morphine pills without acetominophen, norco, ect, but they push the 5/500 hydros. Heck even a 10 mg/ 325 vicodin would be better for me because less acetominophen, but they dont care, they push what they are told to push/..

If I could find a marijana that didnt mess with my mind and just shut my body down and put the brakes on my back pain, I would tell the va to shove thier trash where the sun dont shine. Ive heard some really talented growers in holland can grow different types od marijana that have different effects like mostly relieve pain,. not make you trip out and laugh like your retarded.

I started with Tramadol a few years ago as my back got worse and worse. I was working at the time as a letter carrier. Walking 10 miles per day with all the lifting, bending and carrying that goes with the job.

After a couple years the Tramadol was no longer effective. I went to Vicodin. That worked for a while. Then in June of 2012 I had a major flare up of my back. Ended up in the VA emergency room on a Sunday morning because the pain was so bad. I was in the ER a total of 15 minutes before they gave me a big dose of morphine. Received a prescription for Oxycodone 5 mg and told to take three weeks off work. Went back to work July 9th. Between the 9th and the 24th I worked three complete days and a few short days. The pain was bad. On the 25th I went to work and was there an hour. After a hour of standing at my case and casing mail I had tears running down my face and could barely move or breath due to the pain. That was my last day of work.

Fast forward to today and I'm supposed to take 10 mg of Oxycodone every 6 hours. If I'm sitting in my recliner with the heating pad on my back I can stretch it out to

5 hours before the pain gets bad and I have to dose. If I'm on my feet or out shopping with the wife 4 hours is torture. I sit and she shops. I've joined a gym and try and walk in the pool 3-4 days a week. It's not too bad in the pool but later in the day I really pay for that 30 minutes in the pool.

I wish the VA would over prescribe me.

Something that helps me is the homedics massager that you put on a chair. Thats first order of the day, pop a vike, and get the back massager going. Abt half hour after, numbness in my arm and pain in my arms and back get down enough to get to the coffee pot

also Tramadol Is trash, it a synthetic pain killer that they invented to give to prisoners so they couldnt abuse them. A good chiropractor can help alot.b but the va told me that they dont send patients for chronic conditions, it must be for an acute condition. WTH

STREET have they ever referd you to an orthopedic doc, or pain management?

ive heard theres a drug called opana that will put the brakes on the pain but isnt given out often.

A company also produced a 50 mg vicodin, but the naysayers are trying to get it banned.

Been seen by Pain Management. I hope NEVER to repeat that experience here in Portland. The witch they have working there has a real attitude and a large piece of wood in her posterior. I've been seen by several Orthos in the past. Failed out of PT because it wasn't helping at all. The combination of muscle and bone problems is tough to get a handle on.

    • These decisions have made a big impact on how VA disability claims are handled, giving veterans more chances to get benefits and clearing up important issues.

      Service Connection

      Frost v. Shulkin (2017)
This case established that for secondary service connection claims, the primary service-connected disability does not need to be service-connected or diagnosed at the time the secondary condition is incurred 1. This allows veterans to potentially receive secondary service connection for conditions that developed before their primary condition was officially service-connected.

      Saunders v. Wilkie (2018)
The Federal Circuit ruled that pain alone, without an accompanying diagnosed condition, can constitute a disability for VA compensation purposes if it results in functional impairment 1. This overturned previous precedent that required an underlying pathology for pain to be considered a disability.

      Effective Dates

      Martinez v. McDonough (2023)
This case dealt with the denial of an earlier effective date for a total disability rating based on individual unemployability (TDIU) 2. It addressed issues around the validity of appeal withdrawals and the consideration of cognitive impairment in such decisions.

    • I met with a VSO today at my VA Hospital who was very knowledgeable and very helpful.  We decided I should submit a few new claims which we did.  He told me that he didn't need copies of my military records that showed my sick call notations related to any of the claims.  He said that the VA now has entire military medical record on file and would find the record(s) in their own file.  It seemed odd to me as my service dates back to  1981 and spans 34 years through my retirement in 2015.  It sure seemed to make more sense for me to give him copies of my military medical record pages that document the injuries as I'd already had them with me.  He didn't want my copies.  Anyone have any information on this.  Much thanks in advance.

    • Caluza Triangle defines what is necessary for service connection
Caluza Triangle – Caluza vs Brown defined what is necessary for service connection. See COVA– CALUZA V. BROWN–TOTAL RECALL

This has to be MEDICALLY Documented in your records:

Current Diagnosis.   (No diagnosis, no Service Connection.)

      In-Service Event or Aggravation.
Nexus (link- cause and effect- connection) or Doctor’s Statement close to: “The Veteran’s (current diagnosis) is at least as likely due to x Event in military service”

    • Do the sct codes help or hurt my disability rating
    • VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.

They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.

      This is not true,

      Proof:

About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends.

Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken.

A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did.

I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.
