Question

Just wanted to know if anyone else out there has a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep. I wake up to sound that I know are nothing. I am always thinking that someone is going to break into my house so I am always preparing my mind to defend. My Doc has prescribed me some sleeping meds but I don't have the balls to take them, I am afraid they will kill me or the need will arise that I will need to defend my wife and kids an wont be able to wake up.

Also anyone else beside me wake up to loud sounds in your head, sound like two trash can lids banging together. This is the closest description that I could find http://www.sleepeducation.com/sleep-disorders-by-category/parasomnias/exploding-head-syndrome/overview-facts

I don't even like walking up to my own house I am always checking to make sure that no one is waiting for me I really wish I could shake this feeling I do feel better once I have checked.

do you have a dog in the house? if not get one.. maybe a german shep// they are very territorial, and if anyone tries to get in your house they will tear them a new ass. chiuahauas have supernatural hearing, if you want a yapper that can hear a knat fart.. this will at least give you time to grab your iron and flashlight.

my dog and alarm system on the house help me. also i listen to books on audio as i go to sleep i set it to turn off at 60 minutes. it gives my mind something to focus on other than what was that noise? if i do hear something or just get the creeping feeling i check my dog if she is sound asleep it's ok, i also check the cameras around the house and that gives me some comfort i cuddle up with my doggy and back to sleep i go. the nightmares still come and when i wake from them i grab my dog, sometimes she wakes me from nightmares the ones that make me yell and kick and she just licks my face till i wake up. she is the best.

I am writing my memoirs and would love it if you could help a shipmate out and look at it.

I've had a few challenges, perhaps the same as you. I relate them here to demonstrate that we can learn, overcome, and find purpose in life.

The stories can be harrowing to read; they were challenging to live. Remember that each story taught me something I would need once I found my purpose, and my purpose was and is HadIt.com Veterans.

Some VA shrinks can provide hypnosis.

My husband;s shrink gave him a tape of the way he put my husband under fron the hypnotherapy sessions , to treat his sleep disturbances from PTSD.. to play when he was trying to sleep.

It worked very well. Of course I got hypnotized by the tape too.

I agree there is likely more to it that just not being able to sleep.

However, I like to try "sleepy time tea"...there are a couple different ones. They are herbs and safe. Often I drink sleepy time before bed.

Melatonin, too, is a sleep aid. But you my need some counseling for paranoia.
