VIETNAMVETFAM
We are applying for the third time and have no idea how to find a VSO. The last one was through the hospital. I don't know if we need an attorney or a VSO.. And how to find a very good one.. Thanks..
0 Moderator broncovet Posted July 3, 2020 Moderator Share Posted July 3, 2020 The DD214 should list the medals. Mine lists my medals. Check it to see if it lists the bronze star.
0 VIETNAMVETFAM
No it doesn't.. There are some medals but not that one. We looked them all up..
0 HadIt.com Elder GBArmy Posted July 3, 2020 HadIt.com Elder Share Posted July 3, 2020 Viernamvetfam If your bronze star or other medals don't show on your DD214, you must submit a request by way of form SF 180. If it is an omission that is verified, then they issue an addendum to the dd214, a DD215. You can then submit that as evidence Of course, if the NPRC can't verify, then there is an appeals process, I think SF149 (?). In anycase, they provide further instructions to proceed. You have to submit evidence, say a letter commendation, copy of the General Orders which lists your award, a buddy letter from your CO, etc. It can be a hard thing to prove if it isn't readily shown. 0 Moderator brokensoldier244th Posted July 3, 2020 Moderator Share Posted July 3, 2020 So, he has a bronze star, but no record of it? Like, physically has one, or is this based on his recollection, or something from 40 yrs ago? It should be in his records somewhere- those citations don't usually go away. You may have to request an audit of his military awards https://www.archives.gov/veterans/replace-medals.html
0 Berta
"He was awarded the Bronze Star.. It isn't in his records. I sent it in with him claim." GBArmy is correct, You need to file a DD149- the new address for the DD 149 is in this thread: https://community.hadit.com/topic/66899-awards-medals-success-dd149-dd215/ The form is here: https://arba.army.pentagon.mil/documents/DDForm149.pdf Just put Not Applicable in the 'Injustice' part. All Bronze Star recipients are listed either here: https://valor.militarytimes.com/award/7 or here: http://www.americanwarlibrary.com/personnel/bronze.htm If his name is not there, hopeful the DD 149 will correct the list--- There are 2 types of Bronze Star I believe---- Has he ever shared what he received it for? 0 Berta
To add, what other decorations or awards are on his DD 214? What branch was he in and what was his MOS in Vietnam? The older denial does state that he was in combat-Vietnam. Edited July 3, 2020 by Berta added more

I think I can help with the VSO/attorney question and its a good one, by the way!!! Sometimes you need the experience and expertise of an attorney while at others a VSO will suffice. Some

In reference to the hospital records. If you can find out the hospital name, you can ask VA to request the records or you can contact the hospital and ask them where do they send their old records.
