  1. By any chance do you have aortic valve problems?  The reason I ask my husband just passed away.  And were you taking Sertraline/Zoloft.  My husband was put on Sertraline when he told doctor he thought he had ptsd and had had it since vietnam. He got out in 68, went on police dept in St. Louis.  That was during all the racial up rise in 60s and 70s. I’m sure he did have ptsd due to both jobs, but he had never been treated for it.  So the dr gave him Sertraline and about two weeks into taking it he had a seizure.  So the doc took him off it.  They did a liver enzymes, which came back really bad. I assumed it was Sertraline reaction.  I’m still trying to put two and two and come with something that caused his death so quickly.  Doctors did not tell me anything.  On death cert it says alcolic cirrhosis, heptocellular carcinoma, multi organ failure..  in 1979 he was diagnosised with histoplasmosis in his eye. So I was reading about that and I saw where it can cause heptocellular problems I kept reading that it can be linked to arotic valve disease, and high blood pressure.  I’m just trying to figure all this out and was wondering if you might have similar issues.  Histoplasmosis is caused by bird droppings and bats I think. I’m going to go back and read all that again.    Good luck with your situation.

  2. My husband just passed away on the 27 of March 2023.   He was hospitalised for having 2 strokes which damaged his right leg. He has been in and out hospital every two days up around March 19, when hospital sent him home on hospice, and he lived three days.  He actually died of multi organ failure.  Kidneys completely quit, liver failed and he had to have his stomach drained 4 times, each time they got 6 litres off him. He ha filed for hypertension in 91, and was denied.  It is in his medical records he had hypertension in service.  By looking up other stuff while he was in hospital on va site and had it, I saw hypertension now can be service connected to agent orange.  We had planned to file but things were just moving so fast.  Can I file a pack act claim on his behave now and maybe get the reto pay.  Yes he was on two different meds for hypertension.  I would apreciacate any help you can advise.  Thank you ahead of time.  He was 100% pt/guide since 14.

@broncovet Could you consider taking Treysnonna comment and those after to a new topic (if possible)? This one is about 15 years old.

@treysnonna The VA gave me sertraline (Zoloft) to help address chronic muscle, joint, nerve pain, and fibromyalgia. It did not do much at lower doses, but was more effective at higher doses. However, despite ordering refills on time, the VA failed to send them to me in a timely manner. I ran out and didn't expect to feel like my head was about to explode from the worst migraine ever. I did not have organ failure (yet), but did wind up in the hospital with a heart attack caused by the migraine medication sumatriptan. When @Berta was here, she recommended I look at the medication insert and read the fine print. The print was so fine I could not read it, but the FDA web site had it online. I learned that there are certain precautionary diagnostic tests which should have been done to individuals with certain risk factors. I had most of the risk factors. I filed a claim and won SC for having a heart attack. I also filed an FTCA claim which I also won. I would recommend you look up the medical information for Zoloft and review contraindications, side effects, etc... to see if those are potentially related to his current issue. Yes, you can file SC for new disabilities caused by the side effects of medications used to treat SC disabilities.

@jamescripps2 It's amazing you survived through all that. You literally won the lottery of life. I hope you are doing well and continue to remain with us for a very long time.

  4. I’m filing for my husband now,  because I have him home on hospice now!  And they have gi given him about 2 wks  to live.  now I did find in his service records that he had high be in service.  But I do not have all of his records.  He did file for hypertension with va after departure from Coast Gauard.  My husband was in the navy and vetnaim on boaters then on land with coastal serveilance out of Danang. I have to Ck on date which he was approved for diabetes in 98 but for some reason I believe the va has it as 2003.   He aws diagonosised at a small va clinic in north ar. He has a spot on his liver and his kidneys have failed completely, he has a pig valve in his heart that was put there in 2013 and it is not closing again.  He is backing up in his stomach with a cites, has had his stomach drained four times and each time they have gotten 6 litres out.  He had 2 strokes  at the same time. Which caused him some trembling and he could not use his right leg after.  He never had bad liver enzymes until the last part of nov. After he started on Zoloft, which about a mouth after he’d had a seizure.  I don’t know  what caused the liver failure,  but things just moved quickly after that.  Doctors said they don’t think it was the meds.  Now one guy said even if I file he could not get an increase because he is already 100% pt.  An Mother guy told me to file if they approve it with a percentage they would adjust his rating from the time they got the first claim until he started receiving 100%.  Ok I have another quest if he passes before April 1 will I get to keep his va Ck for 100% for March?  And how long will it take to get dic started.  And can someone  suggest what all I can get?  I don’t want to sound like I’m money grabbing but I still have a mortgage etc.  on Aug 31 it would be 55 yrs for us.  I cannot believe all the things going thru my mind.  Thank you all for. Always answering my prayers.  Let me add my husband had an eight yr break in service from navy to Coast Guard.  For those eight yrs he was a police officer in st. Louis for yrs and eight in Waco Tx. For four yrs.

  5. Well it has been awhile since I have been on here.  My husband was finally rated 100%/ pt .  I’m in need of some advice.  I need to get bathroom remodelled for him.  I’m looking to get a grant, so how do I go about it?  And I will put in for care giver, so anyone can give me advice I would greatly appreciate it.  He is hospital now and has been diagnosed with to smal strokes as they called it, but it did some damage to his right leg and his hands have tremors.  He also is in liver, kidney, and probably will have to have his aortic valve replaced again.  And may I ask if any of you have had any adverse reactions to Zoloft or it’s generic brand?

  6. Has anyone had multi organ failure after taking the generic brand of Zoloft.  I have hubby in hospital now.  He was put on the med in nov/dec.  he was on it about 2 weeks and he had seizure.  Since then liver enzymes started back bad, and just kept getting worse.  Then his kidneys started going from third stage to dialysis noe.  His heart is going too. He has a replacement valve and it is a pig valve, but it is 10 years.  And is not opening properly.  Doc just ignore me when I ask if this could be due to the generic Zoloft.

  7. Ok hubby got the 100% permanent and total back to 2016.  But he was granted 60% for ckd back to 2011 will they make all those adjustments all the way to 2016. We have not gotten the letter yet.  I assume they are taking the time to make all these adjustments before they can send it out.  Which they were waiting on Coast guard to do the aew before any of this happened.  So we may be in for a wait for it again.

  8. Woohoo!  Talked to va yesterday and she said a letter was sent out on the 7th.  Looked on ebenefits today it says disabilities add up to 100% total and permanent.  They granted 60 percent on kidney failure and another 10 for neuropathy for right lower extremities.    Now if it shows 100% in the disability section on ebenefits it is not iu is it?  I want to make sure I understand it.   Thanks for all the advice from all you guys and Berta.  I’ll let you know more when we get the actual letter.

  9. Oh wow, so we could be waiting for 400+ more days?  Think I’m gonna cry. My husband does not like to file another claim will there is one in the works.  We have been waiting to file for sleep apnea secondary to Diabetes/ cads.  Of course he has been wearing a cpap for like 9 yrs now. He just had a new study done and he has very serious sleep apnea.  I ask if he has pulmonary hypertension too, she told me we would have to ask his cardio,  looks like they could tell from the pulmonary function test.  So I’ll call cardio  on Monday.  But she did say as bad as his apnea is he most like does.  He stopped breathing 82 time during the sleep study.  So  I personally think he should go ahead and file.

  10. hubby had his C Nd P for iu.  On the  renal failure, they are saying because he is not putting out protenura out.  Sometimes you do not do that until later stages. And they used the c&p notes from Jan. Where they are proposing to reduce his rating his cad.  They did an echo, but I ca not find it in blue button c&p notes.  We are your thoughts on this?

  11. Congradulations on award.  My hubby got his partial award in May 30, 2018.  We have yet to receive any retro.  But he did retire out of navy/coast guard, so they have to do an aew(audit error worksheet).  And from what we can find out it is the Coast Guard holding it up.  They said part of it was the gov shut down.  But the only send them in once a month.    Now the remand they sent to Cheyenne Wyoming, our ro is St. Pete.  But they also did a c & p for his cads, which is service connected and  they are proposing to reduce it from 60 to 30. It was a messed up c&p.  They guy lied and put down that hubby could use a push mower to mow yard.  And he did not tell the c&p doc that at all.  My husband has fallen twice this week.  My daughter had to help him up. He is having a lot of problems with his ears now and sinisus, but I think it is due to to the cpap.  They put him on some kind of spray for his nose and 30 days  of the highest dose of penicillin.    The c&p doc also put that hubby did not have any hytrophy in his hearts left ventricular,  etc.  I down loaded papers from his last hospital stay in aug that said all that.  Left and right are both in larked and thickened.  He never even looked at it.  We still have not heard when or even if they are going to set up a hearing.

Do any of you guys think that if we sent in iris and pointed out where it says he has hytrophy in left ventricular and both left and right atrium our in large and thickened.  Do you think they would go ahead and really stop the reduction?

Kelley, I hope you get your retro soon.  Hope we get ours too soon we owe my daughter for our bed.  Ha ha

  12. HIs it better to file a soc, ask for another c and p.  We filed soc.  This was for a purposed reduction that will effect overall rating.  And also to set up to deny a appeal which is in remand.  Clearly examiner did not review uploaded material.  Lied on stating hubby could work.  Also stating he could use push mower for mowing our yard and heavy yard work.  Took previous exam to rate.  But previous exam had Mets at 3-5 and he put them at 5-7.  I have letters from two dr stating hubby can not work,  due to having dizziness and falling spells.  It is really stressing my husband out, and I suspect the stress in turn is causing his blood sugar up into 300 to 476.    We don’t want this to drag on for ever.  My husband is 72 and has to mow with riding mower.   No way he can do  it with push mower.  And I’m not sure he will even be able to do that much longer.

  13. Vetquest, Bronco, and Buck, I love you all.  Thanks so much for your quick replies to lead us in the right direction.  Hubby did go and get a copy of c&p. The PA made several mistakes on it.  And the paper work we sent in from the hospital stay contradicts him.  He says there is no cardiac dilation.  Papers says there is right and left atrium mild dilation.  He also checked no left ventricular hypertrophy.  Papers says  concentric lefy ventrical hypertrophy.  He has him down 5 to 7 Mets with activities such as walking 1 flight of stairs, mowing lawn, with push mower, heavy yard work like digging.  Lol. Hubby’s doctor has him down 3 to 5 Mets doing light yard work . Mowing yard on a riding lawn mower.   He also says his heart condition does not impact his ability to work.  Totally opposite of what the examiner that did the c&p in 2016.he also stated that hubby only brought partial study of echo along with a ekg.  It was an ecg, and our private doctors offic did say it was the same.  Pensacola examiner went with results of echo from previous c&p in 2016.. but with different opinions.  Thanks again guys, will keep you informed.

  14. Has anyone had this happen to them.  Hubby had his 3rd heart eval since 2014..  they reduced him from 60 to 30%.  I’m puzzled.  He had c&p at Pensacola by a PA.  He said PA basically bad mouthed the va.  He did not even listen to his heart.  And we get the letter today saying they think his cads is better.   They determined this from the  ecg from the time he was in the hospital in aug/sept.  When he had the lung embolism.  The doctors at hospital did determine that it was not dot.  So it is highly likely that it came from the cads.   He never had surgery to correct the cads,  so I cannot imagined it would get better in 5 yrs.  It did have his left ventricular ejection fraction has 55.  And I think they went with that.  hubby did say he told the PA he did have spells he explained them to him.  It was the syncope ( which is feeling like your going to faint, loosing muscle control). Which he will be walking and have to grab something and stands with his knees bent a little and bounce afraid he is going to fall.  He has fallen several times.  He experiences his dizziness. Dyspena ( shortness of breath with any type of exertion. And that is what 38cfr ejection fraction of 30 to 50 or experiencing dizziness, dyspena, syncope.   His heart doctor had him Down for 3to 5 Mets originally.    So we are going to see him as soon as possible.  I think the OR is the answer here.  Now we have to have a hearing and they said it will be at our expense.  I assume it will be in St Pete, which we are6 hrs away.  Any ideas?

  15. Berta, thank you so much..  you are awesome.  Yes you seem to have A busy life,  and we all appreciate your devotion too all of us.  Take care of yourself too.  We are still pushing to get the back pay for diabetes increase.  The bva approved it on 5-30-18 and they did not finish their audit until 9-28-18.  Sent it to Coast Guard for thei audit on 10-3.  They still have it.  They were furloughed for 5 weeks.  Now it might get sent back on the 3-1-19.   Tired of chasing this monkeys tail.

  16. I also sent in an Iris, about two weeks ago.  Never got an answer.  Perhaps because they could not find it.  When you call Peggy push for answers if it does not sound right.  How long do I wait to check on inquiry #.  Sent to Ro Electronically.  I think hubbys iu and ckd claims were lost at the intake center.    I’m going to call next week again,  if I do not get answers I’m calling the hot line and our congressman.  I’ve come to the conclusion they are just jacking with all of us.
