They should make it a Veteran only position.

Yes he should have picked a Veteran, Just my opinion  but I think this President is starting off on the wrong foot.

I agree with most of you, but the President didn't ask me for my opinion either.Th enew Secretary may be a mover and shaker and maybe he can get things accomplished in working on capital hill. But if he does it by compromise all the time, he probably is going to be leaving important things on the table. The reason I say this is because he isn't a veteran. He just isn't going to think like a veteran does because he wasn't one. And, to compound the problem, he won't be able to advise the President because he doesn't know what he doesn't know. I'm willing to give him a chance, but it's a short leash he is on before we know if he is taking the right kind of advice or it is the same old same old same old.

Veterans groups initially reacted with surprise at the selection of McDonough to oversee the veterans department, especially given his lack of personal military experience. However, most advocates have dropped those concerns in recent weeks as McDonough has met with them to discuss his plans and priorities.

Well, I did not like it either (that Bidens VAsec pick was not a Veteran).  "Performance", not plans, will change my mind.  Shinseki, famously, had great plans to eliminate Veteran homelessness by, what year was it, 2005?  

Like yourself I was upset he did not pick a Veteran.  Many Vets feel the same way..how is he supposed to know Vets needs, if he has never been there?

However, I realized that same theory means that MEN can never deliver babies..after all they never experienced it so what do they know?  I recognize you dont have to necessarily be a woman who has had a baby to successfully deliver babies.  

While I would still like to see a Veteran VaSec, performance should be the ultimate criteria not necessarily whether or not they are a Veteran.  

Many/most former military who lead many many people want nothing to do with VA.  So, there may not have been a Veteran qualified for VASEC, who was willing to take the job.
