PTSD stressor(s)
While on AD, I lived with a civilian friend. He was gruesomely killed by a self-inflicted gunshot. Several years after leaving the service, the VA diagnosed me with PTSD, MDD, Anxiety & eventually bipolar (my depression had changed to mania after a few years). I have VA medical records with a PTSD diagnosis & my stressors on file. I want to submit my MH claim.

ptsd PTSD Access to VA records by others after accident
This is not so much a question as it is to let my PTSD brothers and sisters know about something that happened to me many years ago and could happen to them. I’m PTSD 70% (MST), lumbar 20% and wrist 10% and many years ago was involved in a car accident. At the time of the accident I was seeing my VA MH doctor. The accident was the fault of a large company where I live and because of my lumbar and cervical problems I was injured even more and had to go after them to get the surgery needed on my neck. They said it wasn’t their fault of course. I got an attorney and started the process. During this process of fault their attorneys were able to pull my medical recor…

PTSD Claim 12 years after discharge
Hello, I served on active duty with the Army Infantry from 2006-2010 with a couple deployments to Iraq. I was wounded in 2007 and received a Purple Heart. When I left active duty in 2010 I filed a C&P claim and was awarded 20%. Part of my rating was Anxiety. That was 12 years ago and at the time I had no idea how the system worked and didn't have an understanding that my behavior has not been "normal". The C&P Dr. basically said I was okay and sent me on my way. Here we are in 2022 and I finally decided that I needed to actually do something about what I assumed was PTSD. I went to a VA clinic this week and was immediately diagnosed with Chroni…

New VA Regulations with Sleep Apnea Being Secondary to PTSD
I'm rated since 2008 at 50% for PTSD. Also, 10% for tinnitus. I was just diagnosed at the VA with sleep apnea and prescribed a CPAP. I was wanting to file for sleep apnea secondary to PTSD. I have the diagnoses but need to find a doctor to write a nexus letter. The pulmonologist and my PCP said that they could not write the nexus so thinking of using something like valor for vets and would like opinions using a service like that. My second question is I know the VA is changing the percentages from 50% if you're prescribed a CPAP to 0%. I don't know exactly when the changes go into effect but when they do and if I do file will they go by file date or dec…

Do veterans with PTSD qualify for SMC housebound?
My husband is rated 100% permanent and total for PTSD. He was awarded this rating in 2019. He can no longer leave the home due to this disability. Can he qualify for Housebound benefits? He won’t even talk about the subject because he doesn’t believe he should receive income for not being able to leave the home but this causes a financial and emotional hardship on myself, his wife, and our 4 young children. I run all errands as well as care for our children and my husband. I do work as an in home care support provider for one of my children who has autism, but that is our only income besides my husband va disability benefits. Being at home and caring for my disabled child…

If a veteran was discharged due to homosexual admission during the Don't Ask Don't Tell era, can the veteran use the nature of that discharge as an in-service event/stressor to file a service connected claim for post service mental health issues?
Hello, vets community. Let me elaborate, can a veteran link that as an event/stressor in service to file a service connected claim for any potential mental illness symptoms like depression and anxiety that may have been aggravated out of service? Yes, it is known you need a diagnosis, symptoms, and a Nexus letter connecting symptoms to an in-service event from medical professionals first. Commonly, it was practice for veterans discharged under the DADT Policy to receive a General or Honorable discharge, but the veteran's narrative reason on their DD-214 would state, "Homosexual Admission." The problem is, the veteran could potentially be unwilling outed as homosexu…

Delayed on-set PTSD
Concerned about C&P and service connection. In 1987 as an Air Force SP I was deployed to a plane crash. 3 people were killed when it crashed and they were literally scattered over about 5 acres. Needless to say it was very gruesome. Within a couple of months of this I began having severe gastric issues that are still ongoing. I had no idea that PTSD could have been the cause of these issues, when I got out I was granted SC for it at 40% permanent in 1999. I've always had an occasional memory that would pop up but for the most part I was able to handle it. This all changed in 2020 when I was driving through the area and saw a street sign with exit for the town where t…

AQ81 Proposed Rule Change for Mental Disorders
I have been reading the proposed rules for mental disorders and am curios as to whether I fully understand what they are saying. My take on it is that they are adding a 10% rating and getting rid of the requirement that you can't work and receive a 100% rating. This sounds good, but! I am also reading that they are changing the general rating formula to include domains of functional impairment. These domains are based on cognition, interpersonal interactions and relationships, task completion and life activities, and navigating environments. Assigning a disability rating will be based on level of impairment (0-4), 4 in one or more domains or 3 in two or more domains…

Struggling at work
Hello, I am struggling at work, in large part due to PTSD (currently 70% for ptsd, 90% total), looking at potential termination/medical retirement. Would you advise me to file for increase in ptsd now or once I actually have something to show for it (being out of a job- almost 9 years there). I don’t want to file for 100% via unemployability, I just can’t see myself working for my current employer/management. Thank you.

Supplemental Claim PTSD
I filed a supplemental claim to try an increase my PTSD rating from 50 to 70 %. I was requested to take a C and P exam. This was to be done by LHI. The first appointment was 45 miles from my home. I called LHI requested a change since it was too far. They offered a telehealth exam which I accepted. LHI send the information with the doctor’s name. After checking out the doctor’s review they had only one very poor review. I was afraid the exam would go poorly so I canceled. My first exam that I got my 50% rating was with a company other than LHI and had an office about 5 miles from my home. So right now I’m waiting to hear back to setup a C and P exam. I have a few questio…

Sleep Apnea Secondary to PTSD
I filed a claim for Sleep Apnea secondary to my PTSD, which is service connected. I have been diagnosed from the VA as having sleep apnea, and given a CPAP to wear at night. I used Carpenter Chartered Law Firm to do the claim, but got this denial letter (attached is an excerpt). In it, it says "In the absence of other major risk factors such as obesity it would be reasonable to attribute OSA to PTSD as this is considered a risk factor for OSA from uptodate.com". My thought is that if both obesity and PTSD are considered risk factors, shouldn't it be a 50% chance that it could be either obesity or PTSD, and go to the veteran's favor? And doesn't that mean that att…
