  4. VA Supports "Project SHAD" Veterans October 11, 2002 (Printable Version) WASHINGTON – Veterans who believe they may have been exposed to dangerous substances as part of the military's "Project SHAD" or "Project 112" tests are encouraged to come to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for a medical evaluation. "VA's direct efforts on behalf of these veterans go back two years, when we asked the Defense Department to declassify information about the tests," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. "VA is committed to helping the veterans of Project SHAD, Project 112 and all veterans who believe their military service has left them with medical problems," he added. On Oct. 9, the Department of Defense (DoD) released declassified reports about 28 sea- and land-based tests of chemical and biological materials known collectively as "Project 112." They were conducted during the 1960s and early 1970s. DoD had previously declassified reports for 12 other tests. The tests were designed to determine the vulnerability of U.S. warships to attacks with chemical or biological warfare agents. Other Project 112 tests involved similar tests conducted on land rather than aboard ships. VA has already undertaken a number of efforts to help these veterans: As DoD provides VA with personnel rosters of service members involved in tests, VA officials try to find the current addresses of veterans. So far, approximately 1,300 veterans have been notified by VA about their potential exposure and informed about VA programs to help them. Since December 2000, VA has offered medical evaluations to veterans concerned about whether the tests have affected their health. Fifty-five veterans have applied for VA disability compensation because they believe their medical problems are related to Project SHAD. Thirteen of the fifty-five receive VA disability compensation for medical problems unrelated to Project SHAD. On Oct. 8, VA announced that it has awarded a $3-million contract to the Institute of Medicine for a three-year study of the health of Project SHAD veterans. Information about VA's efforts on behalf of veterans of Project SHAD and Project 112 is available on the VA Internet site at http://www.va.gov/SHAD. Veterans who want information about obtaining a medical evaluation or filing a claim for disability benefits, may call the SHAD Helpline at 800-749-8387 or send an e-mail to VA at SHADHELPLINE@vba.va.gov. People wishing to receive e-mail from VA with the latest news releases and updated fact sheets can subscribe to the VA Office of Public Affairs Distribution List.

  6. congratulations! long haul for sure. not accepting donations, but if you liked to buy a ball cap or two that would be great! i need to sell about 24 and i've sold 2 so far, so anything in that area would be helpful. for those who've bought your ball caps before, please wear them at any location veterans gather, we can use the free advertising
  7. congratulations ryan, i am glad it went well for you, this is the way it is suppose to work glad you found us and we could be of help.
  8. i think you are completely right on this, a group where they want you to open up like it's group therapy should be closed. it's hard enough to open up to others in the same boat, the woman may need the support of her partner, and i can understand that, but it seems she should wait in the waiting room. i would talk to whoever is running the group privately and express your concerns.
  9. no offense taken just pruned the forum back from back and forths on the aforementioned thread, so the main topic of the post could be to being responded to.

  12. clarification the post that got him bounced, quote from post "want to kill you all" and alluding to stalking veterans.
  13. Calling All OEF–OIF Veterans VA is contacting nearly 570,000 recent combat veterans to ensure they know about the department’s medical services and other benefits. To demonstrate VA’s commitment to reaching every Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veteran, Secretary James B. Peake, left, helped launch the telephone call–out initiative himself. “We will reach out and touch every OEF and OIF veteran to let them know we are here for them,” said Peake. “VA is committed to getting these veterans the help they need and deserve.” (more)

  20. great news all, the down after you get 100% is common, for many of us, kind of anti climatic, you have all this fight and adrenalin and you get a letter and it's all done, you just need to be aware that is happens to many of us and like any battle you need some time to decompress from it.
  21. it sounds normal to me as long as is he is being paid at 100% and you get your retro, not much but some, i am glad we could be of assistance we have some great folks on this site that day after day they come here to help each other, it's really something special.
  22. sounds like they rated you a 100% schedular which it would seem make the TDIU moot, since you are already 100% it would seem if they gave you the Chapter 35 information that they have also made you permanent. Once the check hits the bank, call the va 800 number and ask for a letter that states you are total and permanent, the letter can be used for state benefits and it is very helpful. also if you were under 50% before make sure you request your co-pays from the effective date of your claim. i also applied for tdiu and they came back with 100% schedular, and now i am total and permanent it all works out the same money wise.
  23. lots of information on the site about informal claims check these links http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%...G=Google+Search
  24. excellent berta i've created a page on the main site for this information now you can just refer folks to this link http://www.hadit.com/ptsd_stressors.html
  25. i heard they were doing that because some veterans were selling their pain meds on the street. i've heard they've even had problems with some veterans getting free bus passes and selling them. ugh, some screw it up for all. from what i've heard and remember this is all scuttlebutt that if you are on pain meds they do test to see if you are taking them. i don't know if they are doing drug tests every time they do labs, i had a ton of blood tests run the other day the doc didn't say anything about a drug test, but i'm not on any pain medicine.
