Dh's Big Brown Envelope Came.... I Don't Know What To Think.

He's at work. I called & told him it came - he said open it, but he has a meeting so he'll call me back to hear what it says.

They gave him 100% for PTSD as a new rating. He's working, and has been all along. He's a civil engineer, and admittedly, they've been giving him less and less responsibility over the past couple years. He's got the most seniority and experience, so he's kind of the grey-beard who points out problems waiting to happen, and answers the questions of the young'ns when they get stuck.

He likes his job. He gets into it with people, but he's working hard on not getting into conflicts.

Ack, I'm babbling.

Will he have to stop working because of this rating? All his VA doctors, shrinks, therapists, all know that he's employed. He told the psychologist who did his rating exam that he is currently employed.

He'll be heartbroken if he has to quit or retire. His job is his identity. He'll be crushed if this means he's "too broken" to be DH the engineer.

He can always volunteer. There has to be life outside of his job, and frankly, he got what most people spend YEARS fighting for. I'm thankful he received a fair decision. He can volunteer, take up a hobby, or maybe just consult at his company? probono? Not sure if they would allow that, but it would keep him "in the game" so to speak. Congratulations, and let us know how it pans out.

When you get the actual decision - post the Reasons and Bases Section.

Then we'll know more about working etc...

Carlie passed away in November 2015 she is missed.

hedgey whoa! As stated before this is a blessing that most are working to get, I know, I just got mines Saturday, there has been good suggestions here. Maybe he can adjust to one, I started to play the keyboard, from scratch, my way of staying inside.

Anyway, is about the opurtunity that he sees next, always pushing for life in the now, Now is the only time we have. Congrats to him. Dan

Provided he's never hidden or lied about his employment, I would let him work, if he wants, and if they rescind or reduce the decision, so be it. Sounds to me that either he can work, w/a 100% PTSD rating or they screwed up. You should prepare for a reduction, just in case it happens. jmo

Congrats to you and your DH.........IMO, I don't think you should worry about the rating, the VA has all the information on his job and with that, the only thing that they really could do is cue themselves down the road, but that would have no effect on the monies paid on the 100% up till the time they may or may not find error. If your hubby enjoys the job then his treating Va peeps know this and let it be as is.

Enjoy this hard fought battle, you both deserve it.

Do yourself a favor.....buy some gold and silver! The printing presses are in overdrive.

I don't know if it's related, but my DH is in bed with a fever of 103, he started coughing last night. Our private doc has him on antibiotics & strong cough meds, so he is out for the time being. At least he's not coughing. I know it must be a coincidence, but he's suddenly one sick puppy.

I'll come back with what's in his decision letter later. Making chicken soup with extra onions & lots of garlic... grandma's heal-all recipe!

      VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.  

      They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.  

      This is not true, 

      Proof:  

          About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends. 

          Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken. 

          A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did. 

          I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.

          There are certain rules about community care reimbursement, and I have no idea if you met them or not.  Try reading this:

         However, (and I have no idea of knowing whether or not you would likely succeed) Im unsure of why you seem to be so adamant against getting an increase in disability compensation.  

         When I buy stuff, say at Kroger, or pay bills, I have never had anyone say, "Wait!  Is this money from disability compensation, or did you earn it working at a regular job?"  Not once.  Thus, if you did get an increase, likely you would have no trouble paying this with the increase compensation.  

          However, there are many false rumors out there that suggest if you apply for an increase, the VA will reduce your benefits instead.  

      That rumor is false but I do hear people tell Veterans that a lot.  There are strict rules VA has to reduce you and, NOT ONE of those rules have anything to do with applying for an increase.  

      Yes, the VA can reduce your benefits, but generally only when your condition has "actually improved" under ordinary conditions of life.  

          Unless you contacted the VA within 72 hours of your medical treatment, you may not be eligible for reimbursement, or at least that is how I read the link, I posted above. Here are SOME of the rules the VA must comply with in order to reduce your compensation benefits:

      Good question.   

          Maybe I can clear it up.  

          The spouse is eligible for DIC if you die of a SC condition OR any condition if you are P and T for 10 years or more.  (my paraphrase).

      NOTE:   TO PROVE CAUSE OF DEATH WILL LIKELY REQUIRE AN AUTOPSY.  This means if you die of a SC condtion, your spouse would need to do an autopsy to prove cause of death to be from a SC condtiond.    If you were P and T for 10 full years, then the cause of death may not matter so much.
