Is it uncommon for a VA pysch to perscribe a long acting benzo like klonopin and a short acting, quick onset one like Xanax for an as needed basis? I'm having the time of my life trying to get my Doctor to realize that the Klonopin is fine for most days, but doesn't touch a panic attack. Thus far she has been dead adamant against Xanax. It really doesn't need to be Xanax, just something with a much quicker onset time than Klonopin because if I take my entire daily dose (4mg) of Klonopin during a panic attack I might as well have taken a placebo because by the time it kicks in my mind is spinning so fast that I can't think straight.

I am currently on pain meds and have a pain contract with my doctor at the VA. Last night I went to the local Emergency Room (VA is an hour and a half drive away and my car is broken). I was diagnosed with pancreatitis and while there given dilaudid IV and then sent home with 2 percocet and a prescription for 30 oxycodone 5mg. I am currently on a regimen of Morphine Sulfate 15mg x 2 daily and vicodin 5mg for break through pain. Not sure whether I am "allowed" to fill this prescription, I called the Dr at the VA first thing this morning. Unfortunately, she is off today. The nurse, who has only been working there for six weeks) could only say, "I don't know. You'll ha…

I was prescribed Avandia by VA and eventually had the prescription cut off with no word from VA as to why or instructions as what to do. While I was taking it I had two silent heart attacks and a stent placed in for a blocked artery. I joined a class action suit and yesterday was informed that I was in a class with a major event while taking Avandia and I had gotten 35,000 which will be dispursed in 2 checks one in four monts for 10,500 and another later for that amount or more depending on what a judge thought. Frankly I did not expect to win much money and that the lawyers would get most of it. They get 33 1/3% and there are some other court approved reimbursements f…

I have cut way back on Klonopin and no longer rely on it to sleep. It's dangerous and morality rates are higher for folks who use sleep aids. So I have tried some new methods with some success: No TV or computer for 1 hour before bed. These cause melatonin issues and biologically screw up ability to sleep I take Melatonin: it puts me right out. But it has a short half life so should be taken within 30-40 minutes of actually going to bed. If you pass 90 minutes you likely need to take it again. It's non addictive and works on me like a charm if I'm not super stressed. Prazosin/minpress It's a blood pressure med. and in small doses at night has proven to…

My husband has IHD, CHF disease with a pacemaker/defibrillator. He also suffers with PTSD. For several yrs, he was on Citalopram, the Dr. took him off that after suspecting his Afib could have been caused due to this med. It has been 9 mos, since taking Citalopram which was a difficult time. He was recently put on a small dose of Mirtazapine which has helped little with his irritability and anger. I'm hoping to find someone that has the same diagonosis (heart, & ptsd) that has found a safe antidepressant to take. Thanks so much, Vetswife

This is what my Nuerologist gives me for my PD. I take it three times a day. Has anyone else had any experience with this drug? It is getting hard to write clearly anymore, even when I hold my hands to steady them. Doing this post, I will continually have to correct things because I keep hitting the wrong key. Papa

I went to the VAMC (Mental Health) and they took me off of Trazodone and put me on Seroquel 400 mg. They left me on the Bupropion though. Haven't had a good night sleep in forever. Guess that is why the dosage is so high. Has anyone been prescribed this medication? What do you think about it?

I know there's a thread about gabapentin, but I didn't want to derail it. I saw the VA optometrist last month. She said she thought I was developing or had glaucoma, but at the rural clinic she didn't have the right equipment to do a definitive test. She said I would be hearing from the VAMC eye clinic for testing. I got a letter saying to report back to the rural clinic (????) next week. Meanwhile, I have been on Gabapentin since November 2007 when the VA put me on it to help with my Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. Over the years the effectiveness faded or my RSD got worse (both which my podiatrist predicted) and the VA docs have increased my dosage. I'm now …

“The number of Floridians who died last year due to prescription drugs shot up nearly 9 percent according to an annual report released on Monday. Medical examiners who performed more than 9,000 drug-related autopsies reported that prescription drugs - including oxycodone - were the cause of death for 2,710 individuals across the state. That same report also found that prescription drugs continue to be found more often than illegal drugs as either the cause of death or being present in the person who died. “ http://www.thefloridacurrent.com/article.cfm?id=24178788 Although these stats only involve one state, prescription drug deaths have become a national problem …
