I got a referral to go see the sleep doctors to try and get a med called "Provigil" to help me not be so sleepy due to the OSA. I got out to the VA and talked to the doctor and he tells me we can't prescribe this drug for you because you take opiates. They must have known this before since I am in Opiate program. I think I would rather die in a ditch than deal with the VA. It was my VA psychiatrist who referred me to get the Provigil. Then I had to go through my PCP to get appointment. Then they turn me down for the drug. I can get it from a private doctor but I can't afford it. I am going to let my PCP and VA shrink know how I feel about them sending me on a wild go…

The VA has been unable to treat my pain with medication and has scheduled me for a trial with a spinal nerve stimulator to see if I am a good candidate for a permenent implant. I was just wondering had anyone had any experience with this.

As I said in my intro last week, I have only recently (beginning of december) returned to the VA system. I'm going to a small local VAMC to get basics out of the way. We've ruled out rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. I've been diagnosed and am getting initial dose of sertraline for depression and PTSD. No improvement yet. Nothing yet for anxiety. For pain, they wanted to start with Naproxin 500mg, but 660mg I was already taking twice a day was just taking the edge off. Tried Tramadol and had a reaction to the first dose. I just started Gabapentin this morning, but only 200mg so that was only enough to tell at least I didn't have a reaction to it, but it↓'ll have to be qu…

Q. As a veteran, do I need to sign up for the Affordable Care Act? A. If you are enrolled in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health-care program, including VA's health care, Civilian Health and Medical and Spina Bifida Health Care, you have coverage under the standards of the health-care law and do not need to take further action. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) does not change your VA benefits or out-of-pocket costs. Veterans enrolled in VAs health-care system will receive this information through the mail. The letter from VA is another means to inform you that there is no need to take any additional steps to obtain health insurance to comply with the health c…

Seeking some opinions: I am a military retiree who is 90% but also TDIU P&T so I'm paid at the 100% level. I get ALL OF MY healthcare through the VA and to be honest, they have always provided me excellent care. Recently I was awarded SSDI so that entitled me to MEDICARE Part A cost free. I got the letter from Tricare stating that in order for me to remain in Tricare I would have to enroll in MEDICARE Part B. My wife remains covered under TRICARE Prime. Well...after doing some research and racking my brain I decided to decline Medicare Part B since I never go anywhere but the VA for care. Did I make a mistake? I am confused as to any long term benefits I may be scre…

I took a dose of Amphetamine (Adderall) and now I can't shut up! It is to help with sleepiness due to sleep apnea. I used to barely speak before 12 pm and now I want to talk. My wife just says "yes, yes...." and reads her romance novels or gets on the computer and plays games. I am lucky see does not listen to me or take what I say seriously. This is a benefit of marriage. You notice all my postings? They are mostly on point, I think. Adderall at work! John

What meds work for you? I am currently on nortriptyline and lorazepam (ativan). The doctor just prescribed Paxil but after the pharmacy warned of a moderate risk of mixing nortriptyline and paxil I have waited before I start the Paxil. I want to talk to the doc about tappering off the nortripyline before I take the paxil. I am wondering what others are taking and how well it works... This post does nothing if you don't comment

Part 2 will be on tonight, 6:30pm (EST) can't say whether it was ABC, CBS or NBC but it appears that generic drug companies can't be sued, if you have a problem. The VA mostly uses generic drugs on us. Good luck w/that if something goes wrong. pr

Alright guys, I am new here, and I am hoping that it will be good to talk to and hear helpful tips from fellow veterans on dealing with the VA hospitals lackluster care. I'll start by introducing myself a bit, I am a USMC Infantry Combat Veteran, OIF era. I seek care in the VA Boston area. I am rated at 70% service connected, and am currently receiving Individual Unemployability because I had to leave my job due to my issues. I am being treated for PTSD, TBI, Chronic Upper Back Pain, Left knee pain (ACL and MCL tear), and GI issues (possible Ulcers, GERD, IBS etc... tests incoming). I also must say how grateful I am for most of the services offered to veterans. Alri…

The message here is please be careful when taking medication. If you think you are taking too much, ask to see a clinical pharmacologist. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?ID=50155446n

Hello, Wasn't sure if this was the right forum to post this. I have a new patient appointment in a week at my local VA clinic and I am really nervous about it. I have never dealt with the VA doctors before and I do not know what I should expect. I never had a good experience with my healthcare while in the military and I am worried I will be dealing with the same crap. (the only exception is the doc. I had when I had my son, she was amazing). I guess I just needed to voice my feelings of anxiety about this upcoming appointment to someone, I hate the unexpected.
