Suspense Date?

Rate this question

Question

I finally had a change on my P&C claim today. It has been in the developmental stage since 8/9/2010 and today it has a column called the Suspense Date of 4/13/2011. I'm not certain what this means. They seem to be wanting me to show proof to them that my graves disease and diabetes was caused by Agent Orange. I was in the signal corps and had nothing to do with the spraying or handling of this Dioxin. I was just in areas where it was known to have been used. I don't have access to their records showing when and where it was sprayed. The only evidence I have that the two things are related is what scienitific evidence that says that contact with AO may cause Graves disease or Diabetes. The VA drs are the ones who diagnosed that I had these medical problems. I don't think that their is a direct corelation, just a MAY cause these problems. It doesn't say that they need anything from me. Just that suspense date. Should I call them? All suggestions are much appreciated!!

Suspense dates are for internal controls. They are fluid, but a used for claims management. The is nothing hard and fast about them. If they have sent you Duty to assit letter, send in any information that you have to help with your claim. Then you just have to wait.

Thank you all for your replies!! One thing I forgot to mention is that they have down another VA medical center on their notes with the same suspense date. The Boise VA center was the one who did my original C&P exam as well as the medical center that is responsible for my malpractice that lead to me getting Hep C. Is it common to have a second C&P exam at a different medical center not involved? I haven't received any letters stating to report anywhere. Just says Walla Walla and a suspense date of 4/11/2011. And ebenefits still says no action necessary by me. Or are they just having Walla Walla taking a second look at my claim? All suggestions are much appreciated!! Mike

Well it's been a couple of weeks since suspense date was entered and I still haven't received a letter that I need to take any action. Claim at the top still says no action needed by me yet sections on the bottom state that they are awaiting more information from me with suspense dates. This still has me confused. I went ahead and printed out the page and stuck it into my file in case they deny that it contained conflicting data. I've tried the 800# and I haven't been able to get thru for a few weeks now. Keep getting the same call back later message. Part of me says to just wait the 2 weeks till suspense date comes and part of me wants to load them up with more information but fear that will put claim back to restart mode. Your advice has been so helpful!! So should I chill or fill up their basket with info they should already know. lol Mike

The VA suspense date reminds me of an old joke.

How do you keep a moron in suspense?

Answer How?

NO RESPONSE GIVEN

Veterans deserve real choice for their health care.

Finally got thru on the 800#, and was told they are close to making a decision. They had to wait for information from the Walla Walla medical. Since I have never been there, the file will be small.

Oh Pete, I have some connections and might be able to get you a pt gig at the Afgani Comedy Store!! Just remember some things like "Shot Glass" and "Your Da Bomb" have different meanings over there!! (why do I always get the unemployed comedians)

This has to be MEDICALLY Documented in your records:

Current Diagnosis.   (No diagnosis, no Service Connection.)

    • VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.

They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.

      This is not true,

      Proof:

About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends.

Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken.

A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did.

I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.
    • Welcome to hadit!

There are certain rules about community care reimbursement, and I have no idea if you met them or not.  Try reading this:

      https://www.va.gov/resources/getting-emergency-care-at-non-va-facilities/

However, (and I have no idea of knowing whether or not you would likely succeed) Im unsure of why you seem to be so adamant against getting an increase in disability compensation.

When I buy stuff, say at Kroger, or pay bills, I have never had anyone say, "Wait!  Is this money from disability compensation, or did you earn it working at a regular job?"  Not once.  Thus, if you did get an increase, likely you would have no trouble paying this with the increase compensation.

However, there are many false rumors out there that suggest if you apply for an increase, the VA will reduce your benefits instead.

That rumor is false but I do hear people tell Veterans that a lot.  There are strict rules VA has to reduce you and, NOT ONE of those rules have anything to do with applying for an increase.

Yes, the VA can reduce your benefits, but generally only when your condition has "actually improved" under ordinary conditions of life.

Unless you contacted the VA within 72 hours of your medical treatment, you may not be eligible for reimbursement, or at least that is how I read the link, I posted above. Here are SOME of the rules the VA must comply with in order to reduce your compensation benefits:

    • Good question.

Maybe I can clear it up.

The spouse is eligible for DIC if you die of a SC condition OR any condition if you are P and T for 10 years or more.  (my paraphrase).

      More here:

      Source:

      https://www.va.gov/disability/dependency-indemnity-compensation/

NOTE:   TO PROVE CAUSE OF DEATH WILL LIKELY REQUIRE AN AUTOPSY.  This means if you die of a SC condtion, your spouse would need to do an autopsy to prove cause of death to be from a SC condtiond.    If you were P and T for 10 full years, then the cause of death may not matter so much.
