VA Scandals
Shreddergate and other scandals
On the 13th of October, 2008, VA Watchdog dot Org broke the story about documents found in shredder bins at the VA's Detroit Regional Office.
A number of those documents were critical to veterans' disability claims.
As the story unfolded, VA finally began to release information on the incident and we learned that more than one Regional Office was involved in this shredder scandal.
The VA's Office of Inspector General (VAOIG) is investigating.
VA has instituted new guidelines regarding handling of documents.

I use the Detroit office and I have researched and read everything I could about it. First let me say I had letters and forms involved there since June 2000 to present date 2012. I do not believe the thought that all these people just threw stuff away just to be mean, they did it on fear of losing their jobs. They were given a 1 week of amnesty to turn in all letters and forms they had stuffed in back of desk or hidden in a room. They did not want to get caught, and to show they had a good work performance they trashed the evidence anyways. They have a tremendous pressure from office mangers about case loads and bringing down the percentage of filed claims. So they did li…

I dont know how this stuff can happen. Most of us claimants have to Prove over and over again everything from a service nexus to how disabling the service connected conditions really are and this happens???? As an advocate I was drawn into 3 separate situations years ago that ,in my opinion, were fraudulent attempts ( one vet and 3 widows) to deceive the VA. I had to contact the US CAVC in one of those situations. I would have contacted the OIG if the other situations went forward. None of the 'widows' were legitimate widows of any veteran and did not fall under the common law marriage regs at VA at all, but I knew VA would find that out right way.And none of t…

Several months ago I went to the post office with my gazzionth filing to the VA and prepared to pay the exorbitant $6.45 for the Certified Mail-Return receipt requested. The postmistress asked me what was up on this as I have been doing it for 4 years. She said if all I needed was proof of mailing (which I did) then I should think about using USPS Form 3817 Certificate of Mailing. I smartly used it that day for my CUE filing to the Seattle RO. Wonder of wonders--nothing for months. I finally did an IRIS and asked what happened. As expected, nobody knew. I shot back a new one to them enclosing a copy of the prior filing, a copy of the 3817, and an explanation of what the …

Florida cemetery buries veteran in a cardboard box 7 hrs ago Members of Congress are fuming at the discovery of a WWII veteran who was buried in a cardboard box at Florida National Cemetery in 2004. Sadly, Lawrence Davis Jr. had no loved ones to see him off, so Veteran Affairs buried his remains in the same container they arrived in from the medical examiner. Though the cemetery duly holds a special service four times a year for veterans who are buried without family present, the circumstances bring up the question of what exactly constitutes a "dignified burial." Meanwhile, Florida's senators are supporting "The Dignified Burial of Veterans Act of 2012," which wo…
