VA Scandals
Shreddergate and other scandals
On the 13th of October, 2008, VA Watchdog dot Org broke the story about documents found in shredder bins at the VA's Detroit Regional Office.
A number of those documents were critical to veterans' disability claims.
As the story unfolded, VA finally began to release information on the incident and we learned that more than one Regional Office was involved in this shredder scandal.
The VA's Office of Inspector General (VAOIG) is investigating.
VA has instituted new guidelines regarding handling of documents.

I don't do a lot of face to face with vets, these days. Years ago when the Vietnam vet wannabes and fakers, started to recount their days in the jungle. I would ask them one question: " So, what was your MOS?" A blank stare, or hesitation, usually gave them away. I am also a bit disappointed how the word "HERO", is thrown around, these days. It devalues the word and the deeds. Just being incountry, does not make one a hero.

VA investigators find entire claims and other critical documents in shredding bins at Detroit Regional Office. VA official will only say, "I can't talk about that." http://www.vawatchdog.org/08/nf08/nfoct08/nf101308-1.htm

I don't knoow if this is worth anthing at all but thought it might be of some interest. Neither do I know how far to credit the source. I called the Texas Veteran's Commission and in speaking to a person there asked how bad was it with the shredding room report there. What I was told was that the documents found out there were only a couple of duplicates extra to the originals still remaining in their proper place in the files. Just an FYI.

On Wednesday February 3rd, I went to the VARO and presented a "NOD" to the intake clerk at the front desk. When I asked that it be date stamped, the clerk told me that the date stamp machine was taken in the back and that she would just write on the top " received VARO" with her initials. I told her that this was a time sensitive letter and insisted that she go in the back and stamp it in or put her supervisor's name on it as well, She verbally assaulted me and threatened to call "security" ( this means the goons with guns ). I suggested she either gets the letter stamped or call the VA police. I noticed, what appeared to be a supervisor peek his head o…

I am sending you the same information that I recently called and relayed to a staff member of the Chicago Tribune. This Monday, October 27, 2008, Senator Durbin and Senator Akaka will visit the Chicago VBA Regional Office for an inspection. Recently, it has leaked to the public that some VBA employees across the nation have purposely thrown veterans' mail in the garbage. This is a problem because, in most instances, a veteran's claim for compensation may hinge on the missing article. I have come across veterans that have assured me that they sent in documents pertinent to their claim, only to be informed that the mail was never received. Well, the two senators wil…

With certain exceptions, the VBA is not authorized to throw away any mail or documents submitted by a veteran or on his/her behalf. Every piece of mail should be received in the mailroom and inputed into VBA's tracking system. However, some mailrooms are so understaffed that materials get lost or misfiled, and when they are located, say, about four weeks later--in most cases, they are correctly placed in the claims folder. Nevertheless, for whatever reason, some people do place mail in the shredder bins. Just an observation, but it may be done because a claim has been evaluated (completed) and ready to be promulgated, and the additional evidence may make it necessary to r…

Help? I spoke to a helpful individual at the AMC today who I have gotten to know over the years on the 866# and he informed me that they were waiting on records from the JSRC since April 08. That is currently holding me up. They had gotten something from them in the past sometime last year, but it was not what they wanted. I have all these records at home and he said that if I send copies they will not be good enough. They have to come from them. I called the kind folks at the records center and they informed me that the last request from the AMC was Feb 2007, and no other had been recieved. Should I coordinate the request and delivery? Should I send the AMC items anywa…

Former Marine pilot Dean Toth had perfect hearing when tested over the past three years by Southwest Airlines, for which he now flies. But when his disability claim landed at the Department of Veterans Affairs last year, it included a hearing exam showing he was nearly deaf. He collected about $93,000 in back benefits for that disability and began receiving $2,500 in monthly payments.Toth didn't suddenly lose his hearing: Instead, according to a 10-count indictment returned this week, he conspired with his next-door neighbor in Crestwood, Daniel Ryan Parker, a supervisor for Disabled American Veterans, to doctor his medical records and bribe a claims reviewer at the VA…

Damn, when will they learn that this S H _ T is going on at all the VAROs. What the difference in a dishonorable vet. falsify evidence and government employees shred or hide evidence to deny or withhold benefits to veterans, their widows or dependents. They all should go to Jail. Unopened claims letters hidden at VA offices By RICK MAZE March 03, 2009 A new report about Veterans Affairs Department employees squirreling away tens of thousands of unopened letters related to benefits claims is sparking fresh concerns that veterans and their survivors are being cheated out of money. VA officials acknowledge further credibility problems based on a new report of a previous…
